Graduate
Minority Scholarship Program in Public Health
The
Connecticut Health Foundation and Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU)
are offering scholarships for two students from underrepresented minority
groups to complete a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. The purpose of the
Graduate Minority Scholarship Program is to provide financial support to
minority students in order to increase representation of minority
professionals in public health and contribute to the elimination of health
disparities in Connecticut. The MPH program at SCSU has been accredited
Council on Education for Public Health, an independent agency recognized by
the U.S. Department of Education to accredit public health programs.
The
scholarships are intended for part-time enrollment over three academic years
beginning Fall 2009 and will cover the costs of tuition, fees, and other
expenses up to $8,300 annually. Funding is also available for students to
participate in a limited number of local and national professional public
health conferences. All classes are held in the evening in New Haven and
part-time students attend classes once a week.
Recipients
of the scholarship will be expected to focus some of their course work on the
study of health disparities. This focus may be achieved through several venues
including, the required internship, thesis or special project, and
registration for a 3-credit independent study. A faculty member(s), who
specializes in health disparities research, will provide mentoring and guide
the program of study.
