On Saturday November 5, 2011, the Waterbury Granville Academy youth attended an one day conference hosted by the University of Connecticut Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) at the University of Connecticut – Storrs Campus to support their mission to “increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”  The conference will introduce students to the science, technology, engineering, and math (S.T.E.M.) fields, and prepare them to successfully navigate the road to college.  The conference will be facilitated by students, ranging from undergraduate to PhD level, who will conduct hands-on workshops and demonstrations to keep the students engaged throughout the day. Student facilitators belong to groups such as NSBE, UConn Engineering Ambassadors, and UConn ManyMentors.

Student facilitators are ready to make a positive impact by educating and exposing Granville Academy’s students to the many rewarding opportunities that are available for them, specifically in the S.T.E.M. fields. The ultimate goal of this conference is to inspire, encourage, and empower students to pursue a higher education and become productive and successful their careers. Sponsors CL&P and Yankee Gas, American Savings Foundation, and Leever Foundation.
