Enrichment Program for Young Men and Women for Grades 5 - 7

Purpose
To enhance the self-awareness, attitude, motivation, and future vision in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and business of 5th, 6th, and 7th grade Granville Academy students and, serve as a feeder system for Phases I-V (8th - 12th grade).
Approach
The program integrates age appropriate materials, hands-on projects, guest speakers, mentors, and field visits to achieve its purpose. Learning is primarily project-based so that students learn from what they do. Students are involved in designing, building, creating using hands-on skills to make or do something that has a meaningful outcome for them. Academic skills to include reading, writing, math, science, are incorporated into making something. The use of classroom space and equipment will vary from session to session depending on the lesson plan. Field trips are integral to the teaching method and are selected to enhance the learning experience. Students are encouraged to practice self-esteem skills learned at home.
The program outcomes include the following:
Better understanding who they are Develop a positive self-concept Able to make good choices for themselves Gain respect for themselves and others Understand and better control impulses Take responsibility for themselves Maintain a positive attitude improve success in home and school environments understand the challenges of school that can be overcome
The subjects are a composite of emotional intelligence, self esteem, and brain science material published by recognized professionals designed for elementary age learners. Jerry N. Poole Associates, LLC, a Granville Academy of Waterbury consultant, designed the structure, Understanding Self: Building Self-Esteem curriculum, and integration of STEM-based projects for the Enrichment Program . Mr. Poole received a teacher education degree from Hampton University and a master degree in public administration from the University of New Haven.
